Here are some tips for maintaining your family’s oral health between dental visits.Because periodontal health is now linked with overall health and well being, we understand that there’s never been a more important time to take charge of your oral health. Besides routine dental cleanings and checkups, which are your best line of defense against oral health issues, there are a number of things you can do at home to promote optimum oral health. Dr. Anthony Giamberardino, your premiere family dentist in Medford, has tips for maintaining your family’s oral health between dental visits.

Switch to an Electric Toothbrush

Proper brushing technique is so important for removing the plaque buildup that causes tooth decay and gum disease. If you’re not brushing correctly, you may also cause injury to gum tissue. An electric toothbrush will do all that brushing work for you, and even time your session to ensure that you’ve brushed for two minutes.

Hygienists report less plaque buildup in patients using an electric brush, and they also have electric brushes for children. Switching the whole family to an electric toothbrush is a small investment to make in optimum oral health.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

We hear this all the time from our general practitioners, but did you know that eating fruits and veggies also benefits your oral health? They actually neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause tooth decay. They also increase saliva flow, which helps to wash away food debris and other particles. Remember to reach for the fruits and veggies when it’s snack time!

Use an Antibacterial Mouth Rinse

An antibacterial mouth rinse is a quick and easy addition to your home care routine. Not only does it give you added protection against the plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay, it also freshens your breath! Be sure to discuss with Dr. Giamberardino which rinse is right for your needs, as unfortunately, they’re not all created equal.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing is so important because it removes plaque and food debris from in between your teeth – yes, you can actually get cavities in between your teeth! It also strengthens your gum tissue, which protects against gum disease. Many people complain that it takes too much time, however if you add it into your nightly routine it will become a habit, and won’t add any extra time to your busy morning schedule.

At Giamberardino Dental Care, we’re here to help you achieve and maintain optimum oral health for a lifetime, however we know that it begins at home, and you are our greatest partner. We hope these tips have been helpful, and we encourage you to call our office to schedule your next appointment.
