Your dentist in Medford says there’s something else to keep in mind: the importance of maximizing your dental insurance and fortifying your oral health. Why is this so important now, and what can you do to get the most from your current coverage? You’ll find out as you continue reading!

The Clock is Ticking

For most plans, dental benefits will renew on January 1st, 2020. That means that if you haven’t maximized your current coverage, you have unfinished dental work, or you haven’t visited a dentist for preventive care, time is running out.

Unfortunately, of the over 160 million Americans who have dental insurance, only 2.8% of them will actually take full advantage of their available coverage. Statistics also show that the average person only uses in the neighborhood of $323 of care annually. With the annual yearly maximum averaging around $1,250 per person, that means over $900 in available care is being left on the table.

A Risk of Losing More Than Just Money

The standard dental insurance plan provides 100-80-50 coverage. Here is a breakdown of the benefit dispersal:

  • 100 – Typically, at least one annual preventive care visit (which includes a cleaning and examination) will be 100% covered.
  • 80 – For basic procedures like fillings and root canals, up to 80% of the cost can be covered.
  • 50 – The placement of crowns, bridges or other more complex procedures is generally considered major care, with up to 50% of the related cost being covered by dental insurance.

It’s obvious that the greatest savings come from being proactive and taking advantage of preventive care. Those who fail to are at a greater risk of losing more than just money. It also leaves them more susceptible to oral health issues like cavities, gum disease and other challenges.

Don’t Let Your Deductible Go to Waste

With any plan, there will be a deductible, which is the amount that each patient is responsible for paying before dental insurance will provide coverage. If you’ve met your deductible for the year, then now is the perfect time to get in to have any unfinished work completed or for a preventive care visit. Therefore, you won’t have to pay another deductible in 2020 for dental work that could have been applied to this year’s coverage.

Not only does taking this proactive approach protect the monthly payments you make to maintain dental insurance, but it also helps to ensure the longevity and health of your teeth and gums.

If you feel like you’re behind in the oral health department, then all hope isn’t lost. You can take a step in the right direction by reaching out today to schedule a visit with a local dentist!
