After a crazy year of lockdown, people are more ready than ever to go on vacation. From relaxing on the shore of an exotic beach to visiting family a few hours away, there are many ways people plan on spending their summer. If you’re like most, then you may view traveling as the perfect opportunity to get out of the house after being holed up for so long. However, your oral health could easily derail your plans for adventure if you’re not careful. Here are five ways you can prevent dental emergencies from ruining your fun.

Pack a Dental Care Travel Kit

It can be challenging to stay on top of your oral hygiene routine while traveling, especially when each day brings something different. However, brushing and flossing daily is critical to prevent plaque and bacteria buildup. Maintain a healthy smile by stashing a travel kit in your bag that contains your dental care essentials. Fill it with a travel-sized toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss to keep your teeth problem-free while on the go.

Brush and Floss During Rest Stops

Every time you arrive at the airport for a layover, fuel up your car, or pull over in a rest area, use these breaks as an opportunity to brush and floss your teeth. After all, it may be the only downtime you get that day – why not take a few minutes to care for your smile?

Stock Up on Healthy Snacks

It’s hard to limit snacking during a long flight or car ride when there’s not much else to do. Luckily, you can avoid putting your oral health at risk by munching on tooth-friendly foods instead of sugary treats. Carrots, celery, apples, nuts, and cheese are nutritious choices that benefit your mouth and body!

Drink Plenty of Water

During vacation, it can be tempting to drink more alcoholic and sugary beverages than usual. But be mindful of your consumption as these drinks can damage your enamel and lead to tooth decay. While it’s OK to enjoy these beverages in moderation, drinking plenty of water will help keep your teeth clean. It washes away harmful bacteria, neutralizes acid, and stimulates saliva production. Not only will it quench your thirst, but it can do wonders for your oral health!

Visit Your Dentist Before Departure

All it takes is a toothache or jaw pain to put a wrench in your vacation. Avoid these complications by scheduling a checkup with your dentist before leaving for a lengthy trip. It allows your dentist a chance to detect or treat any issues that can cause an emergency down the line. Plus, you can enjoy your days off more comfortably now that you know your teeth won’t be a problem while away from home.

Taking proper precautions to keep your mouth safe will help you get the most out of your vacation. By following these tips, you can maintain a healthy smile that will last for many summers to come!
