There are many scary things about Halloween: haunted houses, spooky ghosts, and creepy spiders. But your smile doesn’t have to be one of them! Despite it being one of the most sugar-filled days of the year, you and your family can still maintain healthy oral habits. Your dentist in Medford shares some tips on how to keep your smiles “boo-tiful”!

Snack Smart

It is oh-so-tempting to snack on sugary treats throughout the day. However, do your best to avoid grazing and limit candy to mealtimes. The more often you indulge, the longer cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth will remain.

Stay Hydrated

Whether you’re walking around the neighborhood trick-or-treating or hanging out at home watching scary movies, it is helpful to stay hydrated. This is not only great for your overall health, but frequently drinking water will wash away lingering Halloween candy in your mouth to prevent cavities.

Be Picky About Your Candy

Not all candies are created equal. Some are better for your oral health than others.  For example, hard or sticky candies–like jawbreakers or caramel apples–can stick to your teeth and wear down their enamel. Instead, choose softer options, like peanut butter cups, soft peppermint patties, and sugarless gum.

Remember to Eat Real Food Too

It can be easy during this time of the year to fill up on junk food instead of healthy meals. Eating prepared food will help you to feel full and less tempted to dip into the Halloween bucket. Do your best to make healthy choices during your Halloween celebrations, such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and other nourishing foods. These nutrients will help keep your teeth and gums healthy during the fall festivities and beyond.

Maintain Your Healthy Oral Habits

At the end of a long Halloween night, it may be tempting just to crawl into bed without doing your usual nightly routine. But make sure you at least take the time to brush and floss your teeth, even if it’s while you are wearing your costume! These simple habits are your number-one defense against cavities and gum disease, especially after a holiday filled with delicious candy.

Halloween is full of fun and spooky times but no need to be frightened of unhealthy teeth! Keep your pearly whites looking and feeling their best this fall season by practicing these simple tips.
