Maintaining a healthy smile isn’t always lead. With the business that life brings comes forgetfulness, and with forgetfulness comes oral health issues. If your smile isn’t looking the way you wish it did, why not make a change? New Year’s resolutions are an excellent way to do that and can help you set your eyes on the prize over the next 365 days. To help you get your smile on track, read on for four New Year’s resolutions that can give your pearly whites the boost they need!

#1: Visit the Dentist

When was the last time you went to the visit? If it was more than six months ago, now is the time to schedule an appointment! During these biannual appointments, your dentist does an exam of the oral cavity so they can identify and treat any issues they find. Your hygienist will also clean your teeth to remove buildups of tartar. By visiting your dentist twice per year, you can avoid a range of oral health issues and keep your teeth as healthy as possible.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night for two minutes each time to remove plaque, bacteria, and food particles. Floss between your pearly whites every night before you go to bed to remove debris that you can’t reach with brushing alone. Sticking with this dental hygiene routine will lower your chances of issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

#3: Cut Out Tobacco

If you smoke cigarettes, you’re 10 times as likely to develop oral cancer as non-smokers and twice as likely to develop gum disease. Cutting this bad habit out of your life to prevent these issues. Ask your dentist, doctor, therapist, friends, and family for support and resources if you need help quitting.

#4: Whiten Your Smile

Unfortunately, beverages like coffee, tea, dark sodas, and red wine can stain your smile. If you want to cut back on dental discoloration, consume these drinks less often or sip them through a straw so they don’t have as much contact with your teeth. You can also ask your dentist about cosmetic options like teeth whitening and veneers to give you a more beautiful smile.

With these resolutions, your oral health will be better than ever before. Whether you decide to follow through with one or all of them, you’ll be showing off a gorgeous grin you love by this time next year!
