Summer is the season of relaxation, vacations, and having fun in the sun. If you’re planning on a trip, then the last thing you’d want is to experience a dental emergency. Not only can this mess up the summer vibes, but it can put your oral health at risk of further complications. For this reason, your dentist in Medford suggests four practices that can help keep your teeth safe and healthy during summer vacation!

#1: Schedule a Dental Appointment Beforehand

One of the best ways to maintain your oral health and prevent dental emergencies is to visit your dentist twice a year or sooner. During your appointment, they’ll be able to monitor the condition of your mouth, check for any developing issues, and provide the necessary treatment to address any that they may detect. This will help reduce your risk of a dental emergency happening while you’re traveling. That’s why it’s best to see your dentist before heading out.

#2: Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

With all the time for having fun, it can get easy to forget to keep proper dental hygiene in the summer. Try to set a routine for cleaning your teeth every day, that way your smile remains healthy and safe from harmful bacteria. Even if you’re on a trip, be sure to brush twice a day, floss at least once, and rinse often with mouthwash for best daily results. You might even pack a new toothbrush and toothpaste to ensure the proper tools for removing debris and plaque from your pearly whites.

#3: Stock Up On Healthier Snacks

Although there are plenty of delicious summer treats, many of them can be detrimental to your dental health in the long run. Instead of bringing mainly sugary foods that can increase the risk of cavities, be sure to throw in some healthy meals in your fridge or cooler. These can include fruits, veggies, cheese, and yogurts, which provide nutritional benefits for both your smile and your overall well-being. Try to also switch out carbonated beverages for water or milk, as these drinks can help keep your teeth stronger in the long run.

#4: Pack a Dental Emergency Kit

Even after practicing multiple preventive measures, an urgent dental situation can still happen when you least expect it. To be prepared for this, you might consider packing an emergency kit containing the following items:

  • Saline solution
  • A small container with a lid
  • Gauze
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Pain relievers (like Ibuprofen) that are not anticoagulant
  • Your dentist’s phone number

By practicing these few tips, you can feel more comfortable about enjoying your summer vacation with good dental health. Speak with your dentist if you’d like a checkup and cleaning, and they’ll be happy to help you maintain a healthy smile!
