It’s 2023! Now that the toasts have been had, the fireworks have been set off, and the smoke has cleared, it’s time to start working toward your New Year’s resolutions. Regardless of how many goals you set for yourself in the new year or what categories they fall into, it’s a good idea to make taking good care of yourself one of them. While this includes your whole body, why not make resolutions specific to your smile? Read on for ideas on New Year’s resolutions to promote excellent oral health.

#1: Brush and Floss Better

You’re likely aware of how important it is to brush your teeth, but are you doing it the right way? Be sure to brush for a full 2 minutes once in the morning and once at night. Additionally, use a toothbrush with soft bristles. This will help prevent enamel damage. You should also use toothpaste that contains fluoride, which strengthens your teeth against decay.

Floss every night after your last meal. This will remove food that’s gotten stuck between your teeth throughout the day as well as 40% of the plaque on your smile.

#2: Cut Out Tobacco

Did you know that people who smoke cigarettes are 10 times as likely to develop oral cancer as those who don’t? They are also twice as likely to develop an infection of the gums called periodontal disease. If you need help cutting this bad oral habit out of your life, reach out to friends or family for support and speak with your doctor, therapist, or dentist for resources.

#3: Visit the Dentist

If it has been more than half a year since you last saw your dentist, you’re overdue for a checkup. Visiting your dentist every six months is key to excellent oral health. This is because these biannual checkups allow them to identify and treat oral health conditions before they get out of hand. They will also offer you recommendations on how to better care for your smile in the new year.

#4: Whiten Your Smile

Last but not least, consider whitening your smile as a New Year’s resolution. Not only will this give you a confidence boost, but a nice smile is also proven to help people occupationally. People with gorgeous grins are seen as being more confident, capable, and trustworthy, so a professional whitening treatment is an investment in both your self esteem and your career.
