Invest Your Tax Refund in Better Oral Health

Cash in black envelopeIf you’re like many Americans, your tax refund has probably hit your bank account. If you haven’t spent the extra money yet, don’t blow it on a big-ticket purchase. Instead, invest the extra cash in a healthier smile. Your oral and general health are closely connected. Here are 3 ways to support a healthy mouth and body by using your tax refund to improve your smile.

1. Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup

The American Dental Association recommends a cleaning and checkup every 6 months. However, many adults delay routine visits because they are too busy or concerned about the cost.

Research has found that every $1 spent on prevention can save up to $50 on restorative services. Regular cleanings and checkups stop common oral health issues from occurring in the first place, so you’re less likely to need costly procedures later.

Not to mention, you’ll significantly reduce your risk of tooth loss. If it has been a while since you’ve seen a dentist, use your refund for a cleaning and checkup. If you have dental insurance, your benefits can cover 100% of the expenses after a co-payment.

2. Schedule Any Dental Work

If your dentist finds any issues during your cleaning and checkup, or you’ve been putting off getting a filling or replacing a crown, don’t wait any longer. Schedule any dental work while you have the money to avoid a costly dental emergency later.

Although you may never expect it to happen to you, 1 in 6 Americans has a dental emergency every year. Not only can accidents happen, but many oral health problems result from untreated dental issues, like a cavity or failing restoration.

Use your refund to rehabilitate your oral health. Most dental plans cover about 80% of the expenses of common restorative procedures after meeting your deductible to significantly lower the amount you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket.

3. Fix Cosmetic Concerns

You can’t put a price on the benefits of a beautiful smile, but most people don’t have flawless teeth naturally. Some aesthetic issues affect more than your self-esteem. Some can also influence your dental health, like broken teeth or overcrowding. No matter the issue, there’s no better time than now to invest in a healthy, beautiful smile by addressing your cosmetic concerns.

Although you could spend your tax refund on a vacation or shopping spree, think of the future by using it to better your oral health. A stunning smile will never be outdated or go out of style.
