What is the Difference Between a Crown and an Onlay?

July 29, 2013

Fillings are a great, simple solution when your tooth is suffering from a cavity. Unfortunately, as your teeth are filled and filled again over the years, eventually there won’t be enough tooth structure left to support another filling. When this happens, we recommend using a crown or an onlay.

At Dr. Giamberardino’s dental office, sometimes patients ask us about the differences between a crown and an onlay. While both of these are great restorative treatments that can return function and appearance to a tooth, they are better for different situations.

A crown is a cap for your tooth and is best suited for restoring teeth with extensive decay. An onlay is a more conservative treatment that’s better suited to a tooth with less decay because it covers a portion of the tooth. Dr. Giamberardino will determine the right solution depending on how much of your natural tooth structure remains.

Crowns and onlays are great solutions for teeth that have become damaged or decayed beyond what can be repaired by a filling. If you have a tooth in need of repair, give us a call today and see how we can help restore your smile.

Cosmetic Bonding Provides a Quick Smile Update

July 22, 2013

At Dr. Giamberardino’s dental office, we offer a variety of cosmetic dentistry solutions to help improve your smile. One of these procedures is cosmetic bonding. This is a quick way to improve the appearance of your smile.

Bonding describes a process of affixing cosmetic resin to the teeth to help cover up flaws or imperfections. The resin is cured and hardened for a strong bond with your tooth. Cosmetic bonding is used to hide chips and stains, cover small gaps and even help to correct a slight misalignment. The resin is custom matched to your tooth color for a natural looking restoration.

This treatment is best for correcting small areas. If more extensive restorations are needed, crowns or porcelain veneers may be a better choice. Dr. Giamberardino can examine your smile and come up with the right treatment to help your smile look great.

If you’re not satisfied with your smile when you look in the mirror, there’s a lot of cosmetic dentistry solutions available to help. Cosmetic bonding can be a great way to improve the appearance of your smile by covering over small imperfections.

The Importance of Flossing

July 15, 2013

While we all know that it’s important to floss our teeth daily, that doesn’t mean we’re all doing it. It’s really important to make sure you floss because flossing removes food particles stuck between your teeth that can contribute to decay.

Flossing is an important part of general dentistry and can help keep your smile healthy. When you come visit us at Giamberardino Dental Care for your dental checkup we can answer any questions you might have about flossing and can demonstrate the proper technique.  Plaque can build up between your teeth and can harden into calculus or tartar. Over time this could lead to decay or even gum disease, so it’s important to floss regularly.

This article from the ADA (American Dental Association) has some helpful tips on the proper flossing technique. If you have trouble getting in between your teeth with the floss, a floss threader or disposable pre-threaded flosser can be helpful. These are all found at drugstores.

Take time now to properly take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing and you’ll have a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime. At your next visit we’ll even give you some floss to help get started! If you have any questions about flossing, just give us a call.

Mini Dental Implants Can Complete Smiles

July 8, 2013

Are you missing teeth but you either don’t want to go through a traditional dental implant surgery or don’t have enough jaw bone to support implants? You don’t have to live with an incomplete smile any longer. Giamberardino Dental Care offers mini dental implants to help patients such as yourself have a complete smile once again.

Mini dental implants allow for greater denture stability without an extensive surgery process. A titanium implant will be inserted during a minimally invasive surgery with a much shorter healing process than traditional dental implants. Your dentures will be attached to the post to remain securely in your mouth.

The titanium post will mimic the function of a tooth root and help to anchor your replacement teeth. The dentures will rest on your gums and won’t slip or come out because they’re implant secured. Your mini dental implants can usually be placed in one appointment, leaving you with a restored smile faster than ever.

We want to offer a wide variety of smile solutions to help all our patients find the right choice for their smile needs. Mini dental implants can be a good choice to quickly and securely anchor your dentures to your smile. Give us a call today to learn more or schedule your appointment.
